But why it so happened that human settlements began to be divided into urban and rural, few people think. When a man came out of the caves and began to build himself a simple dwelling, he lived, of course, only in villages. In a certain area, as many people settled as the land that was suitable for farming could feed. People were engaged in agriculture and cattle breeding, and even today in most countries of the world the basis of the economy is agriculture, because it is this that produces raw materials for industry. To make pasta in a factory, you must first grow wheat.

But in order for plowing and breeding of domestic animals to be less difficult and profitable enough, the villagers needed good implements (agricultural tools), suitable clothing, and other necessary things. Therefore, in any rural community, artisans were valued - those who knew how to make everything well. Sometimes the blacksmith, tailor, potter did not plow the land themselves: for their products, fellow villagers gave them part of the products of their labor (brought bread, butter, cheese), came to help with the household chores. But when the village was completely supplied with all the necessary household items (a kind of local “production crisis”), and people went to the artisan only when someone's hoe broke or a pot was broken, a difficult time came for him.

Therefore, rural artisans often left their village and went to where people from different localities constantly gathered: to the crossroads of important roads, to national sanctuaries, to places where the rulers of the country lived, to whom people from everywhere carried tribute. Craftsmen settled in these places and sold their products to everyone.
